| “The only reason why we ask other people how their weekend was is so we can tell them about our own weekend.” -Chuck Palahniuk, Invisible Monsters |
My pastor was a god. In high school, I often walked away from time together holding my head a little higher. He seemed to always know what to say.
Looking back I see he just listened well. He asked me questions, took interest and let me work out my own shit.
Come to think of it, he said very little.
No one cares what you know. They want to know if you care. Sounds trite, but it’s true.
Everyday questions can gently pry open the most closed off person. Don’t interrogate – investigate. Look for God already at work in them. Tell them what you see.
Pauses provide breathing room. Take a breath before responding. Give them time to work out their own shit. God is the one working in them, not you.
They’ll think you’re a god when in reality – you just learned how to listen.
Next week I’ll dive deeper into the science of questions. But only for a minute. Until then…
Cheers,
Mark
